2018 Honda CR-V

Hondas are considered to be one of the most reliable car brands on the road due to their longevity. Purchasing a Honda can be an investment that allows you to own a reliable vehicle long-term. When you’re ready to make the purchase, there are a few important steps to take to maintain the vehicle over time.

Check the Levels

Make it a point to check the levels in the engine to ensure that it can operate properly and doesn’t have any issues that develop with frequent use. The levels should be topped up with the cooling system to reduce the risk of the car overheating. It’s also necessary to check the wiper fluid level to ensure that you have visibility and can remove any dirt on the windshield. Read the owner’s manual to determine the specific type of liquids that need to be used to avoid damage to the vehicle.

It’s also necessary to take a look at the transmission fluid on a regular basis and refer to the owner’s manual to determine how much is needed. The differentials and transmission should be flushed after looking at the service interval tables.

Check the Tires

You’ll want to check the tire pressure once a month to ensure that they’re properly inflated, which can allow you to enjoy a smooth ride while also increasing your fuel efficiency. You can also inspect the vehicle to determine if you need wheel alignment. Check to see if the car will drive in a straight line while taking your hands off of the steering wheel for several seconds while driving, which can also lead to excessive wear of the tires. If you fail to keep the oil topped off or replace it, you’ll find yourself having to pay for expensive repairs.

Perform Oil Changes

Changing the oil is one of the most critical steps to take to keep the engine running past 200,000 miles. The oil is considered to be the blood of the engine and needs to be changed at least every 3,000 miles or every three months, depending on what comes first.

Keep the Vehicle Clean

Keeping your vehicle clean will allow it to maintain its appearance and can also prevent excess wear and tear on the parts. You’ll want to wash the exterior, the undercarriage, and the engine bay to remove contaminants that can lead to damage. The body of the car should also be waxed every six months to maintain the shine and protect the paint. Make it a point to use automotive cleaners on the paint because using household cleaners can easily strip the finish.

Detailing the interior is also necessary to maintain the upholstery and limit the damage that occurs. Vacuuming the inside of the car, cleaning the seats, and wiping down the dashboard is essential once each month.

Inspect the Exhaust System

Look for parts that are present in the exhaust system and tighten any of the clamps that are loose when you’re able to take a close look at the car when it’s on ramps. You’ll also need to be aware of any unusual noises that you hear in the exhaust while the car is in use to determine if any repairs are needed. In some cases, the entire exhaust system will need to be replaced instead of repairing a specific part of it.

If you want additional tips on how to maintain your new Honda and keep it running long term, contact our dealership to talk to an expert. We’ll provide you with more information and can help you choose a specific model that meets your needs.

Teens are expensive. Between college, transportation and other expenses, it might be tempting to shave a few corners, but handing down the family clunker or buying a stripped model can put teen drivers at risk. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that half of the crashes involving teens are fatal, and motor-vehicle accidents kill more 14- to 18-year-olds than any other cause.

You don’t want your teens driving overpowered sports cars or hulking, hard-to-handle behemoths. The best new cars for this age group will provide good value, be easy for new drivers to handle, have excellent crash test results and come with plenty of safety features.

Honda offers several new safe, easy-to-drive models that can be purchased for less than $25,000 to $30,000. They all are available with Honda Sensing, a suite of active safety features that includes blind-spot monitoring, collision-mitigation braking, lane-keeping assist, and adaptive cruise control. A leading consumer magazine singled out the Honda Accord, HR-V, Fit and CR-V as great vehicles for teen drivers. They are nimble performers, get excellent gas mileage, receive top marks for reliability and provide outstanding crash protection.

The Honda Civic is also worthy of praise as a nimble, exceptionally cost and fuel efficient car for teens. The Civic provides many of the technological features teens are looking for while providing additional safety at a fabulous starting price of $18,750.

We invite you and your teens to visit our Honda dealership to check out all our new teen-friendly models. We have a nice selection of vehicles and always provide customer service sure to please, so stop in today!

How to Choose the Right Tires for your Honda Vehicle

Over time, your tires wear out, leaving less than 1/16 inch of tread and making them unsafe. They also can develop problems, such as bulges, bubbles or punctures. Whatever the cause, sooner or later your Honda vehicle will need replacement tires. How do you know which ones to buy, and when to buy them?

Here are some of the common reasons for rough idle:

Know Your Tires

The best way to get maximum use of your existing tires is to have them rotated periodically by your dealership when you come in for routine maintenance. Your dealer’s service technicians will inspect your tires and adjust their pressures according to your vehicle’s specifications. Many Honda vehicles monitor tire pressure for you, so it’s easy to know when to add air. Maintaining proper pressure helps you get the maximum service life from you tires and provides you the best handling when you drive.

Make the Right Selection

When the time comes to replace your tires, the first place to look is your owner’s manual or Honda Owners’ Link for recommendations. You will need to know the tire size and specifications before you choose a brand. Our Parts Department carries a wide selection of tires that match your requirements, and our skilled staff can help you make your selection. You can choose from all the popular brands, including Pirelli, Dunlop, Goodyear, BFGoodrich, Yokahama, Michelin and more.

Of course, you want to know that you’ll be getting a good deal on the right tires. That’s why you get the fourth tire for free when you buy three tires at our Honda dealership. You can often find online Honda service coupons that cut your costs even more. When it’s time to change out your tires, visit our Honda dealership and rest assured you are getting the perfect replacements at a great price!

Why Does My Car Shake When at Idle?

Rough idle is a symptom of a problem within your vehicle that you shouldn’t ignore, as it may indicate a serious underlying issue. If your car shakes at idle, take it to a certified mechanic, like the ones at our Honda dealership, for diagnosis and correction.

Here are some of the common reasons for rough idle:

  1. Motor mounts: It’s the job of the motor and transmission mounts to dampen vibration. When they break, you’ll feel excessive vibration, especially at idle. You can diagnose this yourself by putting your car in neutral. If the shaking lessens, you very well could have broken mounts. A professional mechanic can quickly confirm this.
  2. Timing belt: The timing belt choreographs the actions of several components and accessories. A stretched, torn or worn-out belt will result in inconsistent timing, which causes shaking. This most often occurs in high-mileage vehicles. If you start seeing cracks, ribbing or looseness in any of your belts, have them replaced right away.
  3. Fuel intake: Engines don’t like dirt, and that’s especially true of the fuel injectors and intake valves. If they become befouled by dirt or debris, they will deliver uneven amounts of fuel with each engine cycle, causing a high-frequency shutter or shake. A technician can clean out the dirt, and you can often avoid the problem by using quality fuel and perhaps additives that clean the fuel intake system.
  4. Spark plugs: Vibration can be the result of faulty, misfiring or worn-out spark plugs. If replacing the plugs doesn’t fix the problem, you may have deeper compression-related issues. If you replace plugs, make sure to use ones recommended by the car manufacturer. Cheap plugs are false cost savings.
  5. Hoses: Many times, engine shake can be traced to broken, loose or disconnected hoses. Bad air/vacuum hoses can cause serious sake. Reattach or replace hoses as necessary.

Unless you are an expert shade-tree mechanic, seek the services of a factory-authorized service center like the one at our Honda dealership. Our certified technicians will expertly maintain and service your car, and get you back on the road right away.

How to Convert Your Honda CR-V to a Camper

The great outdoors are, well, great, but some folks just don’t like sleeping in tents. Wet ground cloths and hauling gear back and forth can get old in a hurry. But if you are a Honda CR-V owner, you’re in luck! It’s not that hard to convert your SUV into a surprisingly comfortable camper that is also fun to drive and gets excellent mileage. If you have an AWD drive model, so much the better.

Here’s the procedure:

  1. Remove the back seats. They can be removed and stored in a cool, dry place.
  2. Cover bare metal with car mats.
  3. Build a platform from 2×2 and 2×3 lumber the size of the area that was taken up by the seats. The height of the platform should be the same as the back of the vehicle.
  4. Anchor the frame to the bolts that held the rear seats.
  5. Cover the top of the frame with 5/8-inch plywood. Cut the pieces so that one covers the aft section of the frame, and the remaining pieces hinged so that you can access storage space under the frame, in the seat/foot-well area.
  6. Pad and carpet the platform. Use carpet remnants that match the sizes of the plywood panels. This will be where you place your air mattress and sleeping bags.
  7. Attach a cargo net to the vehicle’s bottom gear ties and the top of the seatbelt anchors.
  8. Attach Velcro to the side of the cargo area and attach curtains to the Velcro.
  9. Build a small tent to cover the back of the vehicle so that you can leave the back window open. The tent can be fashioned from nylon with mosquito netting to keep bugs from coming through the open back window. Magnets and bungees will hold the tent in place.

Estimated cost is about $200. You should have enough room to stow five gallons of water, a cooler with food, an air mattress, two sleeping bags, a few changes of clothing, towels, toiletries, a solar phone charger/lamp, first aid kit, water purifier and some cooking gear.

Driving a Honda CR-V is already a fun experience. Driving a CR-V camper is a whole new level of enjoyment. If you don’t own a CR-V yet, stop into our Honda dealership and check out our inventory of new and used models. We think the converted camper will have you smiling from ear to ear, so visit us today.

Honda Certified vs Used

Nothing ruins your day faster than finding your car missing from its parking spot. And if you are a Honda owner, you should realize that this is not an idle worry. The 2016 Hot Wheels report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau ranks the top 10 cars most beloved by thieves, and the Honda Accord is number one. In 2015, thieves stole 52,244 Accords, with model years 1994, 1996 and 1997 proving the most popular. The second spot goes to the Honda Civic, with 49,430 thefts that are topped by model years 1997, 1998 and 2000.

Obviously, thieves know which cars are easiest to sell, which is certainly a backhanded compliment to the Honda Motor Company. You can take several steps to prevent your Honda from being stolen, including:

  • Lock your vehicle: Keep your car locked at all times, including while you’re driving it.
  • Parking: Never leave keys in a parked vehicle. Don’t leave the vehicle with open windows or sunroof. Never leave your car running when its unattended. Hide your vehicle title where a thief won’t find it. Don’t park your car in a high crime area or in a dark spot.
  • Valuables: Don’t tempt thieves by leaving valuable items in the car, such as laptops, cameras or cellphones.
  • Immobilizer Theft-Deterrent System: An immobilizer theft-deterrent system is standard on the Honda Accord and Civic models. The system uses an ignition key with a built-in transponder. The car key carries a transponder code which must match a code in the vehicle computer. If they don’t match, the engine won’t start.
  • Glass: Have your VIN etched onto each of the vehicle’s windows. It discourages thieves, who don’t want to pay to replace all the windows.
  • Transceiver: Have a radio frequency transceiver installed on your vehicle that allows police to trace the location of a stolen car.
  • Steering wheel lock: While these aren’t foolproof, they discourage thieves who will likely move onto another car without a steering wheel lock.

Our Honda dealership will be happy to demonstrate the Honda Immobilizer System when you come in for a test drive of the Accord, Civic or other fine model. You’ll find all our employees give top priority to your satisfaction.

2017-honda-civic-type-r

The Honda Civic Type R Prototype has been making the rounds at this year’s most prestigious auto shows. Flashy and fast, the R represents the Civic’s foray into sports car territory. You’ll already find a Civic R overseas in certain markets, but Honda is planning something special for American shoppers.

What is New for the Honda Civic Type R?

The current Civic was redesigned for 2016. The all-new 2017 Hatchback is the first Civic liftback in almost two decades. Now the Honda Civic Type R Prototype is showing us a glimpse into the future, revealing where the 10th generation Civic is headed next year. The Prototype has a low, wide stance similar to the Hatchback. An iconic red “H” badge and a sporty red line add accents to the brushed aluminum-effect finish. The 20-inch wheels are piano black with red accents.

The car’s curb appeal definitely comes from its racy attitude. Muscular and aerodynamic, the R Prototype wears an aggressive fascia, smoked headlights, and a winged carbon fiber splitter. Sculpted air intakes house diamond-mesh inserts. The hood sports a central air scoop in a trapezoidal recess. Carbon fiber side skirts run along the sides while a carbon fiber diffuser sets off the wide rear fascia. In yet another racy touch, a bright metallic red tailpipe is one of three functioning pipes.

In Europe, a Civic Type R is already on the track, showing off. It beat Nurburgring test track records for the fastest time in its class. The single-scroll turbo engine kicks out 306 horsepower. An overlap inlet and exhaust help prevent turbine lag. Torque steer is controlled by separate steering knuckles. A mechanical limited-slip differential and two-stage switchable dampers sharpen the handling of this racy ride.

For many consumers, buying a previously owned vehicle is a smart choice. You save money in several ways when you go used, including lower prices, less money down, smaller monthly payments, less sales tax and less expensive insurance. But not all used vehicles are the same. A certified pre-owned (CPO) Honda offers several advantages over non-certified used vehicles. Let’s see why.

Honda Certified Pre-Owned vs Used

What is a Honda Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle?

Honda Certified Pre-Owned cars must be well-maintained with fewer than 80,000 miles and under six years old. Each Honda must survive 182-point appearance and mechanical inspection performed by Honda-trained and certified technicians at the dealership. All major systems are evaluated, including exhaust, interior, exterior, wheel, tires, brakes, engine, drivetrain, suspension and steering. Any component not up to standards is reconditioned, or replaced with Honda Genuine Parts. A Honda CPO vehicle is virtually indistinguishable from new in terms of appearance and quality. While you might pay less for a non-certified vehicle, you don’t get the peace of mind that the car is as thoroughly inspected and reconditioned.

The Warranty Difference

A used car might or might not come with the remains of a new car warranty, depending on the vehicle’s age, mileage, and warranty transferability. Contrast this to the powertrain limited warranty (for engine, drive system and transmission) you get with a Honda CPO vehicle for 7-years/100,000 odometer miles. In addition, if you buy Honda CPO vehicle while it’s within the new-vehicle warranty period (3 years/36,000 miles), you get a non-powertrain limited warranty with coverage lasting from 1 year/12,000 miles to 4 years/48,000 miles. The non-powertrain limited warranty is good for 1 year/12,000 miles if you buy the CPO vehicle after the new car warranty has expired. The items covered include the brakes, steering, safety restraint system, electrical, suspension, heating and cooling, fuel system, door and switches, audio/video/navigational systems, sensors and fluids.

Honda CPO Benefits

When you buy a Honda CPO vehicle, you not only get a pristine car with a great warranty, you also get a special financing rate on select models when you use Honda Financial Services. You will receive free Vehicle History Reports for CPO vehicles, as well as a free three-month trial period for SiriusXM Radio. Another important option to consider when you buy a Honda CPO vehicle is Honda Care Certified Additional Coverage, which supplements the famous long-term reliability you get with every Honda vehicle. These Additional Coverage Plans cover periods from 7 years/100,000 total odometer miles to 8 years/120,000 miles. They cover roadside assistance, lock-out assistance, concierge emergency service, personalized travel plans, rental car reimbursement, trip-interruption benefits and towing. You’ll be happy to know that Honda Care is transferrable between private parties.

Peace of Mind

What it all adds up to is that a Honda CPO vehicle brings you the peace of mind of knowing that you are getting a like-new vehicle at a used-car price. You can rely on Honda to stand behind every CPO vehicle it sells, and the CPO warranty protection can save you hundreds or thousands of dollars in repair costs.
