What is New for the Honda Civic Type R?
The current Civic was redesigned for 2016. The all-new 2017 Hatchback is the first Civic liftback in almost two decades. Now the Honda Civic Type R Prototype is showing us a glimpse into the future, revealing where the 10th generation Civic is headed next year. The Prototype has a low, wide stance similar to the Hatchback. An iconic red “H” badge and a sporty red line add accents to the brushed aluminum-effect finish. The 20-inch wheels are piano black with red accents.
The car’s curb appeal definitely comes from its racy attitude. Muscular and aerodynamic, the R Prototype wears an aggressive fascia, smoked headlights, and a winged carbon fiber splitter. Sculpted air intakes house diamond-mesh inserts. The hood sports a central air scoop in a trapezoidal recess. Carbon fiber side skirts run along the sides while a carbon fiber diffuser sets off the wide rear fascia. In yet another racy touch, a bright metallic red tailpipe is one of three functioning pipes.
In Europe, a Civic Type R is already on the track, showing off. It beat Nurburgring test track records for the fastest time in its class. The single-scroll turbo engine kicks out 306 horsepower. An overlap inlet and exhaust help prevent turbine lag. Torque steer is controlled by separate steering knuckles. A mechanical limited-slip differential and two-stage switchable dampers sharpen the handling of this racy ride.
