The 2016 Honda HR-V EX-L is not only more popular than the 2016 Mazda CX-5 Touring, but it also can give better mileage while on the road, due to the better fuel economy that comes with the vehicle*. The Honda delivers 27 city/32 highway mpg*, compared to 24 city/30 highway mpg from the Mazda. The HR-V is able to extract more miles from a gallon of gasoline thanks to its weight savings of more than 400 pounds. In addition, the Honda is equipped with a smooth, economical continuously variable automatic transmission that optimizes every drop of fuel burnt. The Honda is trim on the outside but surprisingly spacious on the inside, with superior leg room in the first row.
Features
When you compare the HR-V EX-L trim level with the CX-5 Touring trim, you immediately discover that certain features are available on the HR-V but not on the CX-5. For example, the HR-V EX-L comes standard with leather upholstery, but you'll have to settle for cloth in the CX-5 Touring. Another feature exclusive to the Honda is a front passenger seat that can fold flat to create Long Mode storage, perfect for skis, lumber or a surfboard. In addition, only the Honda has rear seats with flip-up cushions that allow tall items to sit upright on the floor. Only the HR-V comes with Auto-Brake Hold, which lets you push a button to automatically apply the brakes whenever you come to stop rather than keeping your foot on the brake pedal. Just press the accelerator pedal to release the brake. Finally, the EX-L comes standard with a power moonroof and navigation, but not the CX-5 Touring.
Safety
Both vehicles come with a full set of airbags: driver, passenger, front head curtain, front side and rear head curtain. But only the Honda earned a 5-Star Crash Rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration***. The Mazda earned only 4 Stars. A multi-angle (normal, top-down and wide) rearview camera is standard on the HR-V EX-L, but the rearview camera on the CX-5 Touring is not multi-view. The Honda also comes with Daytime Running Lights and a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.
