An alternator belt is relatively long-lasting, but it will eventually wear out. The belt can jam if it passes over a stuck pulley, and this produces a screeching noise. A belt can also move slightly off-center over time. This will generate more belt wear, and a damaged belt produces a loud noise as it moves at high speed. Grinding Noises

Another potential noisy alternator issue is a damaged bearing. As we've seen, the alternator spins at high speed as it works. This high-speed movement is possible due to the alternator bearing. Like all bearings, they wear slightly as they work, and wear and tear will eventually cause them to fail. The first indication of a damaged bearing is a harsh grinding noise from your engine.

A damaged bearing slows down the alternator, reducing the amount of electricity it can supply. The damaged bearing places additional strain on the remaining healthy bearing.
